Dr. Akhil Sethi

Dr. Akhil Sethi is board certified in adult psychiatry. He began his journey in the mental health field in England by training at prestigious institutions, including St. Georges Hospital (South London) and Queen Elizabeth hospital (West Norfolk), which is affiliated with the University of Cambridge, UK. He furthered his training by completing his psychiatry residency at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and has had a keen interest in mood and anxiety disorders since then. He has also gained expertise in managing the treatment of resistant mood disorders by doing a visiting fellowship in Electroconvulsive Therapy at Duke University.

He has also taught medical students and psychiatry residents at Rowan University as an Assistant Professor. Additionally, he has worked as a Medical Director at Barnabas Behavioral Health (Toms River, NJ) and at Virtua Memorial Hospital (Mt Holly, NJ).So far in his career, he has been practicing psychiatry for the last 15 years.

Your initial appointment will be for 90 minutes. This provides Dr. Sethi a good amount of time to explore your situation in depth. It will help him to decide with you what the best treatment approach going forward would be. Dr. Sethi will take a thorough, comprehensive medical and psychiatric history. He will address your problems and concerns, and discuss with you various treatment modalities appropriate for your situation utilizing pros and cons. After your first appointment, Dr. Sethi may decide to gather further information from other doctors that you have seen previously, as well as lab and imaging results. Dr. Sethi will be in liaison with your primary care doctor and any specialist you see in order to work as a team with them to optimize your care.
Dr. Sethi will meet with you for 30 minutes. He will review your progress to determine how effective the current treatment approach is. The efficacy of medications and any side effects will be carefully reviewed. He will also review other conjunctive therapies, such as psychotherapy. Follow up appointments will be based on the patient's situation. They can range from weekly to around every 3 months. Typically, they are monthly upon starting treatments.
Dr. Sethi’s practice at Healthy Minds South Jersey is self-pay only. He is out of network for insurance plans, including Medicare. If you wish to get reimbursement, you are able to submit documentation to get your “out of network” benefits. The “out of network” benefits can range from 50% to 80%, meaning that a large portion of the fee will be covered. Check with your insurance plan to find out what your “out of network” benefits are. Dr. Sethi will provide you with the documentation you need to submit for this claim. At the time of service, payment is required by cash, check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard and American Express).
